Southern Water Pledge Tree

With water metering arriving in Brighton and Hove this month we are asking residents to present a water efficient pledge.

Underneath a unique Christmas tree at the Royal Pavilion Ice Rink, Brighton, visitors can find a number of pledge presents that can help them become more water efficient.

The Southern Water Pledge Tree was designed to help inform residents about the importance of saving water.

The interactive tree, created from water bottles, represents average household usage and will provide information about how to use this resource efficiently and effectively.

People can view pictures or upload your own photo of the Southern Water Pledge Tree by visiting  www.facebook.com/SWPledgeTree.

Earlier this year, following two dry winters, the South East was declared to be in drought. For the first time in six years, we introduced measures, such as restricting the use of hosepipes in Sussex and Kent, to help protect supplies. The continuous unexpected wet weather that followed allowed underground aquifers to recharge, which is unusual during the summer months, but the two dry winters did highlight the scarcity of a precious resource which is so regularly taken for granted.

When completed in 2015, our five-year metering project to install nearly 500,000 water meters across Kent, Sussex and Hampshire could save 30 million litres of water a day – more than enough to meet the needs of Worthing, Eastbourne and Bognor Regis combined. Furthermore, we are installing meters which automatically detect leaks in customers’ pipes – the first of their kind in theUK– to save a further seven million litres a day.

Water meters encourage customers to use less water by, for example, turning off the tap while brushing their teeth, because with meters customers pay for every unit they use instead of being charged according to the rateable value of their homes.

Metering installation teams began work in west Hove in November and will work their way across the city from west to east, installing more than 74,000 meters by next October. Teams will work on a street-by-street basis and customers will have the opportunity to talk to Southern Water Customer Service staff face-to-face when their meter is installed to ask questions and receive advice.

Rockinghorse Children’s Charity Appeal

We are proud to be supporting Rockinghorse at the ice rink this year – you can support them too! There is a beautiful old rocking horse at the rink which children can enjoy in exchange for a donation to the Rockinghorse Children’s Charity Appeal.

Rockinghorse face painters will bring colour to cold noses on December 8th, 9th, 15th, 22nd and 23rd – come and have fun!

“As the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital, we are delighted the Royal Pavilion Ice Rink have chosen Rockinghorse as their nominated charity this year, helping to make life better for sick children in Sussex,” said Ryan Heal, Chief Executive of Rockinghorse children’s charity.

Figure skater cuts dash at VIP launch

The South East’s most beautiful winter ice rink will be the UK’s first ever ‘green rink’, using a green energy tariff to freeze the ice and power up the attraction, organisers announced at the VIP launch party on November 8.

Brighton & Hove City Mayor Bill Randall welcomed the move, saying: “I am pleased that the rink will be green this year and hopefully in the years to come.  Ice rinks do use a lot of energy, but this is a wonderful attraction for visitors and people who live in the city and it just makes it even better to know that green energy will power it.”

Entertainment for guests was hosted by Andrea Fox, kicking off with a jaunty ice dance from 21-year-old former British figure skater Kirstie Newbrook, who has signed up as an ice marshall at the rink for the winter season. Other acts included Actually Gay Men’s Chorus, Euphoria Steel Band and The Argus Appeal’s Father Christmas, whilst guests enjoyed tasters from the menu of Jamie Oliver’s Fabulous Feasts rinkside restaurant before taking to the ice.

This year’s rink has more exciting features than ever before with a line up of events and special visitors to be announced soon and ‘beginner-friendly’ skate sessions from 10am to 11am daily, with skate marshalls on hand to offer top tips on learning how to skate, from the winter ice rink’s opening day on Saturday.

With the former Royal pleasure palace as backdrop, the 800 square metre rink has space for 250 skaters per session, with a beginners area and skates from ‘just walking’ to adult sizes, extra penguin stabilisers for kids this year and an extended hour of off-peak on weekdays until 5pm offering seasonal fun and a unique and special Christmas experience.

Jamie Oliver recently announced his involvement, saying: “I’m really excited to be teaming up with Brighton’s Royal Pavilion Ice Rink to add some festive flavour! Fabulous Feasts will be serving up a whole range of gorgeous festive drinks and dishes made from great-quality British produce. With the incredible Royal Pavilion as the venue, it’s going to be a beautiful place to celebrate Christmas and get together with friends and family. Make sure you come and see us and get involved in all the festivities”.

Royal Pavilion Ice Rink tickets cost from £10 for adults and £7 for children under 12 and the one-hour skate times run from 10am to 10.15pm daily. This year off-peak prices run from 10am to 5.15pm, one hour longer than last year and schools can buy tickets for £4 per student. Box office is open from 9.30am to 9.45pm, but it is advisable to book tickets in advance.

Said Shella Parkin, MD of Laine Ltd, who creates the rink every year: “The first session of the day is quieter and beginners are particularly welcome to come along and take the opportunity to get more confident on their skates, with help from our friendly marshalls.
